Meet the team

We believe that a successful workshop or photo tour starts with extensive knowledge of the destination we are visiting, and subject matter we will be photographing. Through a mixture of passion for photography and the love of our country, North of 49 Photography was created to show travelers some of the best photographic locations in Canada... our backyard playground and one of the most scenic countries in the world.

What we do is create the itinerary for our workshops and guided tours with our tour operators and destinations. We then travel to these locations on scouting trips to learn the areas and subject matter for ourselves. We then hand pick the photographer and guides to run these workshops or tours based on their area of expertise.

Our instructor to traveler ratio will never exceed seven to one. On each of our trips you will see two names as photo tour leaders. The first instructor is the primary instructor and the second name is the instructor that will be added if we have more than seven travelers scheduled to be in attendance.

This gives you, the photography enthusiast, excellent benefits... a local guide that knows the area and Professional Photographer that is there to answer your photographic questions.

Your safety is our #1 priority on our workshops, all guides are certified in Standard First Aid, CPR C and AED. We also have strict rules that you must abide by when out with our guides for your safety and the safety of others on our workshops. We have zero tolerance with this matter, so if you feel you must try to pet a bear or touch a whale, or any other wildlife for that matter please find a different tour company to provide a vacation for you.

We believe that you should have piece of mind when participating on one of our tours and workshops. That is why we have located in Newfoundland and work with a company to handle all your bookings and transactions. This company then works as our liaison while we are out in the field to make sure our time together runs as smoothly as possible.

Chris Pepper

Owner of North of 49 Photography

Chris is a workshop leader and guide, taking his clients and other companies clients across Canada. Some highlight trips he runs include wildlife from land to sea. Each year he spends countless hours with some of the best captains photographing Humpbacks, Orcas, Fin, Grey, Beluga and Minky whales. Other days he spends photographing Grizzly bear in their natural environments in BC. Black and costal brown bears foraging for food in seasonal conditions. You can also find him in some of Canadas best migration zones photographing raptors, costal birds and small perching birds. Having a passion for wildlife makes him a great person to be with in the field. He will help you understand how to photograph your subject based on his many years of experience, as well teach you why the behaviour is happening.

The best part about Chris is he's always willing to put down the big lens to take a landscape photograph. Always searching for that special light to capture surreal photographs that captivates the beauty Canada has to offer. Every corner of Canada is ideal to photograph but Chris likes to take it to the next level. You can find Chris taking long exposure images day and night. During the day he likes to use strong ND filters to create streaking clouds or silky waterfall images. By night he loves to shoot the stars and Aurora. Chris can be found on both the East and the West coast teaching these types of photography.

Chris has realized over the years that the most important part of life besides photography is spending time with his family, friends and his dog. Life is to short, enjoy each day with the people that mean the most to you!

Chris is certified in Standard First Aid, CPR C and AED
